Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP)

The Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) grant is a state-funded program based on financial need for in-state undergraduate students. Virginia public two-year and four-year colleges and universities award VGAP to eligible Virginia residents based upon state regulations. VGAP award amounts vary across colleges and universities.

Eligibility Requirements

 **Transfer students must self-identify within 2 semesters of entering VT as VGAP-eligible by providing award letter from prior college showing VGAP was awarded for prior academic year.**

  • Must file the FAFSA or VASA App by our Priority Filing Deadline.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Eligible Non-Citizen
  • Must be a resident of Virginia
  • Must be a graduate of a Virginia high school
  • Must have a cumulative high school GPA (for entering freshman) of 2.5
  • Must have a minimum GPA for renewal of 2.0
  • Must demonstrate financial need (VT Cost of Attendance minus Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as calculated from the FAFSA)
  • Maintain full-time enrollment
  • Must be seeking 1st Bachelor’s Degree

Additional Criteria:

  • Maximum term eligibility of 8 semesters, with no more than 2 semesters per grade level
  • Must maintain continuous full-time enrollment
  • Must advance a grade level in order to receive VGAP in subsequent years (typically completion of 30 credits)
  • Failure to advance a grade level within one year will result in loss of VGAP. A student may regain VGAP once the student earns enough credits to advance provided the student meets all other eligiblity criteria.
  • Receipt of Veteran’s Benefits, ROTC, or other scholarships that are restricted to tuition and/or fees may reduce or eliminate eligibility for this program. Award Process:

Grant is awarded at the time of financial aid packaging.
