Financial Aid Prep: Checklist for Prospective Undergraduates

Step 1: Submit Your FAFSA

Complete the FAFSA by January 22 for maximum financial aid and scholarship consideration.

Remember, you will not be considered for USFA-Administered Scholarships if you do not submit a FAFSA. (You can be considered for non need-based college and departmental scholarships without a FAFSA.)

Step 2: Complete your General Scholarship Application

Applying to Virginia Tech? Do not wait for your admissions offer! Use your applicant credentials from Admissions to apply through your Admissions portal.
Complete the General Scholarship Application by January 22.

Step 3: Complete your College’s Scholarship Application

Do your College/Departmental Scholarship Application, if applicable, by the given deadline.
Explore other Apply-To scholarships and apply by the deadlines listed.

Step 4: Apply for Outside Scholarships

Begin the scholarship search a year prior to the academic year of the award.
Look for opportunities with local organizations (community service, non-profit agencies, place of worship, and employers.)
Use online resources listed here, and never give out sensitive information and only use reputable sites.
